Apple Crumble Pie Recipe Instructions

For the Pie Crust
  • 1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • ½ stick salted butter, cold and cubed
  • ¼ cup solid shortening, cubed
  • Cold water as necessary, 3 or 4 tbsp
  • ½ tsp. apple vinegar

For the Filling
  • 1 tbsp. butter
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • ¾ tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 9 cups sliced and peeled Granny Smith apples
  • 3 tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp. lemon juice

For the Crumble Topping
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 ½ tsps. Ground Cinnamon
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 6 tbsp. chilled unsalted butter, cut into ½ in cubes

Directions for Crust
  1. Preheat the oven to 375 F°
  2. In a bowl mix flour with salt and sugar, then add butter and shortening, rubbing with your fingers until it looks like breadcrumbs.
  3. Put the dough in a piping bag with a large star tip.
  4. Gather together in the bowl, make an indent in the middle and add 2 or 3 tbsp water mixed with vinegar. Knead and integrate using your hands until you get a dough ball, adding more water as needed. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle flour to a working surface and roll out the dough with a rolling pin sprinkled in flour. Roll out enough to cover your baking pan with a little overlap.
  6. Bake for 15 minutes or until the edge is just golden. Remove and rest until cooled.

Directions for the Filling
  1. In a bowl, combine the apples with the sugar and cinnamon and toss to fully coat.
  2. Heat a large nonstick pan and melt the butter on medium-low heat. Stir in the sugar, cinnamon and apples. Cook for 5-7 minutes and remove from heat. Add the flour and lemon juice, mix well, and the spread the filling on the pie pan or baking dish.

Directions for the Crumble Topping
  1. Mix flour, sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt in a food processor, add butter and pulse mixing until you get a crumble consistency.
  2. Spread over the apples and bake for 30 or 40 minutes until golden brown, then reduce the heat to 350 F and continue baking until the topping hardens, about 35 to 45 minutes more.
