Garam Masala literally translates to “a hot mixture of spices,” and appropriately so. As a famed Indian spice mix, garam masala has garnered international fame and adoration. But what is it really?
It is a spicy curry Indian seasoning blend that delivers a slow body-warming heat that intensifies over the course of the meal. It is a balanced blend of an almost infinite number of Indian spices including peppercorn, cloves, cumin, mace, cardamom, nutmeg, bay leaf, coriander, star anise, fennel, and others. Like curry powder, there is no one way to make garam masala. There are as many variations as there are preparers of Indian cuisine.
Use our garam masala blend alone, or as a base enhanced with other spices according to your personal tastes. Use it while cooking, or keep it on the table as a finishing spice. Add sweet warmth to chicken, lamb, fish, potatoes, rice, breads, stews, curries, and more. Use it in traditional Indian curries, or for a fusion of world flavors experiment with garam masala sprinkled over acorn squash, dusted over corn on the cob with butter, mixed into freshly bread doughs, or blended into grilled beef or buffalo patties.
Store garam masala in an airtight container for six months or less. It should be used quickly because eventually the spices will age differently and this will alter the balance of flavors.
