Chipotle Powder

The chipotle pepper actually begins its life as a jalapeño pepper that is left on the vine to ripen to a bright red before being picked. Then it is smoked and dried giving it a divine flavor mix of smoke and spice with slightly sweet undertones of fruit and bitter chocolate.

Chipotle peppers are a distinctly Mexican ingredient that can be used to spice up any meat, vegetable, salsa, or rice dish. It goes especially well with beef, pork, and chicken. In terms of spice the Chipotle peppers have a similar level of heat to Espelette peppers, Jalapeños, Guajillo Chili Peppers, and Tabasco Sauce. If your recipe calls for the Chocolate Habanero and you’re looking for the flavor without all the heat, Chipotle Powder can replace the smoky, fruity, sweet notes without nearly as much heat as the habanero.

This chipotle pepper powder from Mexico is finely ground with a beautiful dark orange color and a smoky spice with a moderate level of heat. Ground Chipotle can be substituted in a recipe at a ratio of half a tea spoon equalling one large chipotle pepper. In some dishes chipotle chili powder can be a more useful ingredient than a whole dried pepper, especially in rubs, marinades, and salsas. Chipotle peppers are especially popular in some mole sauces.
