Chabichou du Poitou

A cheese over a millennium in the making, Chabichou is creamy, spreadable, and perfect for your next party. This cheese has a cylinder shaped known as a ‘bonde’ by French cheese makers and a wrinkled, brainy rind. Under the rind lies a wonderful world of sweet, savory and tangy flavors peppered with a bit of acid and lemon zest. A little age can add a bit of nuttiness to the taste. Each bite is full of fresh ‘goaty’ notes that goat cheese eaters know and love.

The story of Chabichou goes back to the year 732 when the French defeated Arabic armies in the area at the Battle of Poitiers. Many left, but the ones that settled were mainly goat herders who evolved into cheese producers. They named the cheese cheblis (‘goat’ in Arabic) and then name transformed into Chabichou over time. Fortunately, cheesemakers continue to use traditional methods to produce some of the freshest, flavorful goat’s milk cheese you’ve ever tasted.

Feature Chabichou as part of a cheese or charcuterie board at your next gathering. This cheese is spreadable, so it works well with baguette slices or water crackers. Pair Chabichou du Poitou with lighter white wines or champagne. Beer drinkers should pair it with a light pilsner.

Established in 1897, the Poitou-Chevre is located in the Loire Valley of France. The dairy is a tiny, family operation that produces only goat’s milk cheeses. Every year, they focus on producing masterful versions of regional cheeses using traditional methods. Their passion for preserving their heritage is the motivating factor at the fromagerie, and that heritage is what they share with the world in each of their wonderful cheeses.
